Some Important Things We've Learned from our Research About Candles in General
Around 90% of candles being burned today are made of paraffin wax. A lot of people especially women really enjoy burning candles in their homes, offices or even in hotels, spa, etc. They don’t realize yet that the candles they are burning are emitting a lot of toxins.
Most known branded candles in the market are made of paraffin wax. If the candle label at the bottom doesn’t mention that it is made of 100% soy wax, it is either made of paraffin wax or a blend of paraffin and soy. Other candle manufacturers combine paraffin with soy wax in their candle making and would also claim that their products are made of 100% soy wax. Beware! A lot of consumers are easily convinced to buy a certain candle because of it’s elegance, design, style and most specially because of the scent that they love, but not paying particular attention on what they are made of.
Knowing the harmful effects of paraffin candles, it is really very frustrating when you go to a lot of stores big and small and you see that they are selling paraffin candles. It’s like we are supporting the petroleum industry of foreign countries. Burning paraffin candles are the most common causes of poor indoor air quality. Why? Because paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining. Paraffin candles are harmful to our health and our environment because when burned, they emit eleven (11) toxins, two (2) of which are probable human carcinogens based on the findings by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to the American Lung Association, “Burning paraffin candles can emit small amounts of toxins such as acetone, benzene, lead and mercury into the air. And also, according to Environmental Protection Agency (2000), the black residue from candles is “airborne and is subject to inhalation and the particles have the potential to penetrate the deepest part of the lungs - the lower respiratory tract and the alveoli.” Also, according to EPA, the petrol-carbon soot from paraffin candles can contaminate ventilation ductwork in your homes, adding potential carcinogens into the air you breathe. This soot can also blacken walls, ceilings and furniture.
